Godhood as the final frontier

A light onto the Universe.

The web is awash in toughts on what we must do to thrive in a post-AI world. It all reminds me of some thoughts I had in 2012 at the start of the deep-learning boom. My conclusion then, was that we need to look to the landed gentry of old, for inspiration, because what should we do, when survival is no longer dependent on productive work? A natural transcendence is to see "self-actualization" in the Maslowian sense, but without novel goals and new frontiers, all we can hope for even with free time, is hedonism and escapism, if we don't find something new to strive for. So, what comes after self-actualization?

I may be deemed a heretic in earlier times, but once we have "self-actualized" as humans, we could look upwards, aspire for godlike abilities. In a way, I believe it has always been the case, most religions have two readings: one is to respect and submit to God(s) and the other is to cope with the pressures of our godlike ambitions (Prometheus and Eve comes to mind).

So, if we should strive for "godhood", what would that entail? Being a mere mortal, it would be asking a pet for what makes us humans. We can hardly list the attributes of gods beyond what we as human recognize. And that is, at best, the traits that confines us, either physically, mentally or socially. A god may in broad terms be an entity that is unconstrained by what constrains us:

  • Omnipotence - Unlimited control of nature.
  • Omniscience - Unlimited knowledge.
  • Omnipresence - Unlimited presence.
  • Omnibenevolence - The hardly universal trait of unlimited goodness.

I would add to the conventional dogma, a few traits inspired by our current physical beliefs:

  • Omnitemporal - access to all time, or existing outside of what we human perceive as time.
  • Omnienergetic - The ability to ignore the physical laws of conservation.
  • Omnientropic - The ability to ignore the laws of thermodynamics.

Arguably, these traits are already captured by omnipotence, which is universally the ability to do anything (including the subset of "omni's").

While it may be a comfort to accept the omnipotence of God, in practice we as humans have always strived for control over our surroundings, and of as perfect knowlege as possible, to avoid fate.

So for the self-actualized man or woman, once you live comfortably, why not aim for Godhood? For Humanity as a whole, why not step into adulthood and embrace the responsibility of our own imagination? Let's pursue the divine to become so.

As you may see from the subtitle of this website, I find omniscience the trait that seems most actionable and interesting to me, and I invite you to follow me as I explore further how far we have come and how for we must go, to achieve it.
